Two major Naval Battles were fought in the Spanish American War. Commodore George Dewey struck Manila Bay and destroyed the Spanish Fleet on 1 May 1898 and Comodores William Sampson and Winfield Scott Schley took out the more modern Caribbean Squadron at Santiago de Cuba on 3 July 1898.
In August of 1942, a new club was organized within the United Spanish War Veterans. The name of the club was "Uncle Sam's 1-2-3 Boys". The club was for USWV members who were veterans of the Spanish American War, and who had served or registered for military service in World War I and who had registered for selective service for World War II.

Both had similar casualties; Storm approximately 200, Spanish-American War approximately 385 dead. 4. Both Storm & Spanish/American War veterans received MASSIVE parades of victory upon their return home. 5. Both had singular heros: Storm-GEN Schwarzkopf; Spanish/American War-ADM Dewey. 6. Both were publicly cited by the press & politicians as having healed the wounds of a divided nation during the US Civil War (1861-1865) by the Spanish/American War; Vietnam War (1961-1975) by Desert Storm (President Bush Senior stated on nation wide television, "...We have beat the Vietnam Syndrome!"). 7. Both conflicts were followed by a global war: WW1 (1914-1918) followed the Spanish-American War for the 20th Century. The only other US military action that comes close to Desert Storm was the Spanish-American War of 1898. This declared war lasted approximately 6 months and had about 350 US KIAs. The Spanish-American War was nicknamed "The Splendid Little War" by correspondents of that era. Desert Storm has been nicknamed, "The 100 Hour War." 2. Both the Spanish-American War & Desert Storm occurred in the '90s. 3. Both the Spanish-American War & Desert Storm had speeches/newspapers about them stating that they brought the United States together again...from a divided nation: Spanish-American War reunited the American people after being divided by the US Civil War. DS reunited the American people after being divided by the Vietnam War. President Bush Senior stated to the American people amongst parades for the returning troops, "...WE HAVE BEAT THE VIETNAM SYNDROME!"

The Spanish-American War was mainly fought for Cuban independence. The Americans fought with the Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Filipinos against the Spanish. The American side won and then the US acquired three Spanish territories: the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The US also acquired Cuba although this was not a transfer from the Spanish.
