George H. W. Bush was a navy pilot during WW II. After the war, he earned a degree from Yale and went to work in the oil drilling industry. He started out as a sales clerk. Three years later, he started an oil company which eventually made him a millionaire when he sold out 15 years later.

Bush then turned to politics. He lost in a bid for US Senate in 1964, and was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1966. In 1971 he was appointed US Ambassador to the UN. In 1973 he became chairman of the Republican National Committee. He served one year as an envoy to China, and another as Director of the CIA.

Bush spent two years out of politics, first as chairman of a bank, and then as a professor.

In 1980, he lost the Republican nomination for president of the US to Ronald Reagan. Reagan appointed Bush as his running-mate and in 1981 Bush became Vice President of the US, an office he held until his election as President in 1988.
