Gregor Mendel (1822-84), an Augustinian monk, grew some 28-30,000 peas (Pisum sp.) over a seven-year period. He concentrated on the rate of inheritance for seven different traits such as pea colour, and eventually realized that such rates of inheritance can be mathematically stated; the now famous segregation ratio of 3:1. This simply means that for every 3 individuals which exhibits the dominant allele (or state), 1 individual will exhibit the recessive allele (or state), forgoing the complexity of incomplete dominance whereby offspring are literally the average of two parents for a single trait (such as skin colour).
