Jefferson had a national vision and firm conviction about where American history was headed. He felt that the true spirit of the nation was what he expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Paine's book The Rights of Man ( 1791) captured what Jefferson believed and saw as the role of government. He felt that the only legitimate form of government was self government. He saw the revolution as the opening shot in a global struggle against tyranny that was destined to sweep the world. " This ball of liberty, I believe most piously," he wrote "is now so well in motion that it will roll around the globe." He thought the Declaration was his most important work out of everything he had accomplished. However, he did not like the number of changes Congress made to it, referring to them as "mutilations."
Thomas Jefferson thought highly of George Washington. He knew how important Washington was to the beginning of the New Nation and it's New Government. Even as they began to split on policy he banded with his rival, (Alexander Hamilton), to persuade Washington to stay on for a second term.
When Washington mentioned the possibility of retirement in 1792, therefore, both Hamilton and Jefferson agreed that he was "the only man in the United States who possessed the confidence of the whole" and "no other person … would be thought anything more than the head of a party." "North and South, " Jefferson urged, "will hang together if they have you to hang on." He told Washington.
Though Jefferson resigned as Secretary of State in 1793 and he and Washington grew apart, his respect and reverence of Washington did not cease. Even where they disagreed, Jefferson blamed others influence and Washington's advancing age for their problems.
