Pretty slender.

His appointment of Robert E. Lee to command the Army of Northern Virginia was one of his few successful appointments.

Generally, he was out of his depth, feuding with his Generals, unable to control his cabinet, and refusing to make public speeches. He just kept issuing appeals for loyalty. In the end, this was not sufficient, and he fled from his responsibilities at the moment of surrender.

None.

He was not a success, either as a politician or as a notional General-in-Chief.

He was thought to carry military credibility, on account of his respectable record as a Colonel in the Mexican War fifteen years earlier. But he was out of his depth in trying to conduct the rebellion, and proved unable to control his Generals.

The one virtue he possessed was total integrity and a strong sense of his feudal obligations. This made him seem like a symbol of the Southern aristocratic spirit at its noblest. But it was Lee who really symbolised this quality in the eyes of the Southern public, along with true military genius as well.
