Marie Antoinette was a symbol of goodness and of everything that was right with the French monarchy. Also as queen, she made many changes that affected France's system of government and law. Marie had abolished the law of segregated dining spaces, as she felt it was wrong. She had gained popularity with people of France at first with her generosity as she continuously gave to the poor of Paris. After the Revolution, Marie faced the women who stormed Versailles and when her family and her were forced to live in Paris as prisoners she never lost hope that she would find a way to get out and hold her family's reputation as well as her political career. Even after the Republic was proclaimed in 1792, and her husband was executed. At her trial, she was forced to stay in the dock for fifteen hours at a time, even though she knew that her guilty verdict would be made. At her trail, their verdict deemed her guilty of treason against France. Marie thanked her defense council for speaking eloquently on her behalf, and on her way to the guillotine she even apologized to the executioner for accidentally stepping on his foot on her way up the steps.

She was absolutely different then any other queen the world had seen. She was very stylish and had a way of dressing herself that made everybody look at her and want to copy her immediately. Her character was soft and gentle, but also naive and easily bored. She was also a very strong woman for her time. Napoleon once said of her that "there was just one man on the throne, and that was the queen", meaning that the queen was much stronger of caracter and more capable of making a swift decision then her husband the King. She turned the fashion industry around and made Paris the most stylish capital of the world. She was also the one introducing the croissant to France! Originally the croissant was called "Viennese bread" (bread from Vienna) and because she had been so fond of it in her childhood, they kept making it for her in France. Still today, when you go to a French bakery, you will see that they are still called Vienese rolls.
