After graduating from Eureka College, Reagan was a radio broadcaster for the University of Iowa and the Chicago Cubs. During World War II, he was a US Army officer assigned to stateside duty. After the war, he resumed his career as a movie actor, and later did television. He was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1947 to 1952 and became a public spokesman for the General Electric corporation (GE) in the late 1950's. He was elected governor of California, and served two terms from 1967 to 1975. After an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination in 1976, he was elected as the 40th President of the United States, serving two terms from 1981 to 1989.
