According to the Bible, King Solomon was the son of King David and was born about 1000 BC. He is said to have ruled over the United Kingdom of Israel, the last king of the United Kingdom of Israel before the northern and southern kingdoms split.
Solomon is said to have ruled israel for 40 years, from 971-931 BC and to have extended Israel's influence and power so that many cities and states in the region were forced to pay tribute to Isarel, according to the Bible, to the tune of 666 talents of gold in one year, a huge sum of money. The Bible says he built the first Temple in Jerusalem at great cost, a royal palace for himself, an extensive system of providing water for the city, and many other monuments. The Bible says he had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, built a port for his country's huge trade with foreign countries at a place called Ezion-Geber, brought enormous prosperity to his country and was renowned for his wisdom. A short passage in the Bible describes a visit to Solomon from the Queen of Sheba.
However, the books in the Old Testament that talk about Solomon are the only evidence that such a person ever existed. When archeologists began to explore the places described in the Bible, they expected to find evidence of the structures built by Solomon that the Bible described, but nothing has ever been found. There is no generally accepted evidence that the United Kingdom of Israel ruled by David and Solomon ever existed. No remains have ever been found of his Temple, his royal palace or his port, all described in detail in the Bible. No records of neighboring states paying Solomon tribute have ever been discovered, no references in the many archives and records that exist in other countries at the time of trade with Israel, not a single inscription anywhere with Solomon's name on it. Many scholars doubt that there ever was such a person and regard the whole story as an invention by Jewish priests hundreds of years later, a fictional "Golden Age of Israel" under a wise ruler.
King Solomon built the temple, and also ruled a unified Israel he had mostly peace during his reign.
