First of all, Teddy Roosevelt did not have the respect of the "established" politicians when he first took office. Many felt he lacked the qualification for the job and others thought he was too inexperience. The new Middle Class in society saw Roosevelt as a refreshing change from the "solemn dignity" nurtured by recent Presidents. The Middle Class dubbed him "Teddy" and soon he became known as simply, "TR." He also faced many domestic issues. The slum conditions in the cities needed help, many manufacturing companies were destroying the envirornment in their search for natural resources, and the food industry was not regulated nor inspected to protect the health of the consumers. There also was corruption in state and local politics. TR embraced reform and was an avid reader of the "muckrakers" books and newspaper articles. He supported reform but also knew that business was necessary for the eonomic health of the nation, so allowed some monopolies to continue with some questionable practices. He did earn the name "Trust Buster" even though he disliked the term. TR was one of the first Presidents to side with the working classes and the Unions, during strikes and conflicts with management. He protected the natural resources by setting up the National Forest Reserve and naming parks and monuments. Internationally, he faced many critics because of his Roosevelt Corolary to the Monroe Doctrine. He considered the Western Hemisphere as the "backyard" of the US and intervened when he felt it was necessary. He also received much hatred south of the border and the US became known as "those gringoes." He gave the US military more power and prestige when he sent the "Great White Fleet" on a voyage around the world. And he earned a nobel prize when he negotiated an end to the Russo-Japanese War.
He wanted to go to war due to the Great Depression so they could lower costs and replenish the country and live free
