The middle ages is the period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the start of the Italian renaissance. So around 410 (fall of the roman empire) or 480~(when Rome was abandoned) to 1400 (start of Italian renaissance) or 1453 (beginning of the "early modern period").
The middle ages are sub divided into different periods,
Low period - 410 to 1000
- Fall of the Roman empire
- Migration period where tribes such as the Franks, Visigoths and the goths take over much of the old roman empire laying the foundation for Kingdoms such as France, Germany and Spain .
- Increased influence of the Church as they convert these newly formed kingdoms.
- Beginning of the end of the Byzantine empire as Islam increased in power
- The feudal system starts, as people return to systemic agriculture
High period - 1000 to 1300
- East west Schism, and the beginning of the Crusades
- First cathedrals constructed such as Notre dam
- Increase in learning, foundation of Oxford and Cambridge and the rediscovery of Aristotle's works
Rise of chivalry and domination of mounted knights on the battlefield
Late Period - 1300 to 1500
- Advantages of cavalry lost, see Bannockburn, Stirling Bridge and Morgarten instead pike men dominate the battlefield
- Further increase in learning and art; precursor to the renascence
- Western Schism (Martin Luther)
- Gunpowder appears on the battlefield
