Thomas Jefferson favored poor farmers rather then rich business men. This was the major difference between him and John Adams, and is a huge part in why he won the election. John Adams didn't realize that most of the population was made up by the poor farmers. Although, Thomas Jefferson didn't believe in rights for women, this didn't impact his election because the only people that could vote were adult men who owned property. Also, in the constitution where it stated that all men are equal, it wasn't addressing women, children, or men that didn't own property.
He is often called a Deist or Unitarian. He was suspect of Priests and Preachers of every type and could hardly be called a member of any organized church body or religious group.

The third American President, Thomas Jefferson, did not believe that any part of The Bible was the word of God, but he did admire some of the high moral principles expressed in the New Testament. Disbelieving the miracles of the New Testament but approving some of Jesus' moral sentiments, he produced a thin volume which is called "The Jefferson Bible," edited literally with a razor and paste. He simply left out most of the Old Testament references and anything that proclaimed Jesus was divine or that a miracle had happened.

President Jefferson was either an agnostic or a Deist, Deists believed that a creator God created the world but that after this took no further interest in his creation. If he were alive today, when the possibility of the world existing uncreated is widely accepted, he would probably be an atheist.
