It was the western part of the Roman Empire which fell. It fell under the strain of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1000 years. At this point the western part of the empire lost political cohesion. There was infighting, attempts usurpation, and Germanic military commanders-in-chiefs of the Roman army in the west who installed puppet emperors. This made the Romans unable to respond to the invasions effectively.

The empire fell because of the unstoppable influx of Eurasian peoples. Competition for power between aspiring emperors merely exacerbated the problems.
