Male and (these days) female soldiers alike are called soldiers! Women were not, however, permitted to join the army in the era of the US civil war. The two sides also had nicknames for each other's soldiers, with the southern army's men being referred to by the North as "Johnny Reb" or "Johnny Rebel", while the northern soldiers were termed "Billy Yank" by the South.

North Vietnamese soldiers were referred to as the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) by the GI's in Vietnam, during the war. Southern Communist soldiers living in South Vietnam and fighting in South Vietnam, were called the Viet Cong (VC).
