The South Vietnamese Viet Cong were fighting to liberate their country from foreign colonization or control; and end the rampant corruption in the South Vietnamese regime.

The Americans and their allies were fighting to prevent the spread of communism.

The Vietnam War (1964 to 1975) was fought to keep South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos from falling to the communists, aka the Domino Theory. In 1975, after spending a decade, countless lives, and massive amounts of money, the USA and it's allies gave on South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, and the three countries, unable to defend themselves, quickly fell to the communists. The Domino Theory became a fact in 1975 as far as the 3 countries were concerned. The USA and it's allies, did their best, but, after 10 years, enough was enough.
