1. Germany invades Russia (the Soviet Union) in June, 1941. For two years before this Hitler and Stalin had been partners, since they divvied up Poland between them in the autumn of 1939. Now Hitler turned on his partner and invaded Russia, touching off the largest and most bloody part of WWII.

2. Japan attacks the US, bombing US Navy ships in their base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in December, 1941. Up to this time the US had been neutral and was not fighting in the war.
