The US M1 Garand rifle served in WWII and Korea and was replaced by the M14 Service Rifle in about 1957 and fought in only one war...Vietnam. The M14 rifle served in Vietnam all the way up to about 1968, by which time all units in Nam were using the M16 Jungle Rifle. US forces thru-out the free world retained the M14 Rifle until about 1970 or so.

The proto-types of the future M16 (called the AR-15) were developed in about 1957, but the US Military didn't purchase any of them during the '50s. The M16 first went to South Vietnam as an experiment in 1961/62, then issued as a "Jungle Rifle" in 1963; then as a standard issue US Rifle by 1967/1968.

Why didn't the US use bolt action rifles during the civil war?

The US purchased some 900 of the Greene rifles, so they did see some use. However, they were considered much too complicated for general issue to a largely conscript army. 1000 of the bolt action Palmer rifles were issued by the Union Army for Cavalry forces during the Civil War. However, it was most likely high cost which prevented them from seeing particularly widespread service.

What kind of rifles does Lebanon's army use?

The Lebanese military has traditionally had good standing with the US, and the US M16 rifles, as well as the CAR-15 and M4 carbines are fairly standard among their Army, although not necessarily exclusive. The AK series rifles (both in 7.62x39 and 5.45x39), the G3, the HK33, and other types may be found within the ranks of the Lebanese Ground Forces, as well.

Is it illegal to sell a military gun to a cilvilian?

Yes, and no. The US Military does not sell guns to ANYONE. However, there are FORMER military rifles that are legally sold. This includes rifles used through the 1950s that are not fully automatic (machine guns). My very legal collection includes military rifles from Great Britain, Germany, Russia, Italy, Switzerland, the US, Columbia, Argentina, China and Japan.

What kind of rifles are on the infantry crossed rifles?

The regulation US Army Infantry insignia consists of two crossed model 1795 Springfield flintlock muskets of .69 caliber. This was the US Army's first US government made & issued shoulder arm. This infantry insignia was officially adapted by the US Army in 1922. From about 1875 until 1922, the US Infantry used the crossed rifles that were issued to the US Infantry at the time. Everytime the US Army adopted a new rifle, the Quartermaster would have to issue a new infantry crossed rifle insignia to match the new rifle. For example when the Army adapted the model 1903 bolt action Springfield in 1903...crossed 1903 Springfield insignia's had to be issued. This all ended by the new 1922 regulation.

What was the first gun ever used in the US army?

When the US was first getting started as a separate country (1776) the US Army was armed with whatever they could get. Some were armed with civilian flintlock hunting rifles, some with Long Land Pattern British muskets (the Brown Bess) and some with flintlock muskets supplied by the French- see link for some more information: http://www.hoover.archives.gov/exhibits/RevAmerica/4-Where/musketfire.html
