The US Civil War probably effected more people then any American war before or after it. How people were effected ran from being effected in a small way, to the ultimate measures a society could bear. It was, as in any civil war, one that divided the American people. Just on that note alone, President Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd Lincoln had four brothers in Confederate uniforms. On the topic of the First Lady, she reportedly made a public statement that General In Chief was a butcher.On a more general basis the war had these affects:

* It caused the death of approximately 620,000 Americans and wounded for life tens of thousand s more;

* It caused the death, the first assassination of a US President, Abraham Lincoln;

* it abolished slavery in the US, freeing millions of slaves. And many Blacks died either as Union soldiers or by other war related circumstances;

* The losses incurred by families of those that died in the civil war are countless. Clearly millions of households lost family members; and

* To give a better picture of how the Confederacy was effected, here is another staggering fact; on quarter of its 1860 military -aged white males, were all killed and the other one quarter were maimed for life.
