Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City. As a boy, he loved nature. He liked hunting and camping. When he was older, he traveled out west because he loved the mountains and plains. Roosevelt grew up to become President of the United States. As President, he thought it was important to keep land and water free of buildings and pollution. He worked for new laws to protect forests, rivers, and other Natural Resources. Roosevelt wanted to make sure that special places like the Grand Canyon were protected forever. So he created national parks and forests. He made safe areas for animals to live. The government takes care of these lands. People can also use and enjoy them. Maybe you will think of President Theodore Roosevelt the next time you visit a national park.

Teddy Roosevelt set aside 148 million acres of land to protect them from Public sale. He also established 50 wildlife sanctuaries, 5 national forests, and 18 national monuments. He also became friends with John Muir and together they worked to help save the environment. When Gifford Pinchot (pronounced pin-show) met him, they worked to find a good use for forests.

Along with helping the environment, he had personality and flair. brought many lawsuits against trusts when he was in office. and he also helped pass the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug act.

Teddy Roosevelt did many more things than sit on his butt all day. he was all over the place helping people, the country and the environment. that is why he is so well known today. William Howard Taft was his heir to the republican party, he brought twice the number of lawsuits against trusts than Teddy did. but many still say Roosevelt was the better progressive because of all he did for our country (and the environment). even though Taft did those things. Roosevelt had personality and flair. and Taft sat on his fat behind all day signing lawsuits.
