The Capital is the place where Congress meets.

The two main states where the Capital was located were:

Pennsylvania: Primarily Philadelphia, but also York and Lancaster.

New York; New York City

But Congress has also met in Annapolis and Baltimore Maryland, Leesburg Virginia and Trenton and Princeton NJ.

Once the constitution was signed, the Capital was In New York for a short period, Philadelphia for about 10 years and then Washington DC since, except for a short visit to Leesburg while the British burned Washington DC 1n September 1914.

There have been a total of 8 US Capitals. They are Philadelphia, Baltimore, Lancaster, York, Annapolis, Princeton, Trenton and New York. Washington, DC has been the capital since 1800.
