The Catholics who were the vast portion of the English, were devastated at having their religion overthrown. The Church's belief was that both Henry, and his son, Edward, and his daughter, Elizabeth, were all heretics who had condemned themselves to eternal damnation and weren't doing the English people any good either. Not only did they deny the sacraments and the faith to their subjects, but to generations of English who were raised outside the faith.
