Culture my friend. You see, due to this entire boxing thing between Philippines and Mexico and the anti-Hispanic program in the 1970s; many Filipinos have forgotten and tried to hide the fact that Spain ruled the Philippines from Mexico. Thus, bringing Mexican Spanish culture to the Philippines. Our churches (Catholic) in the Philippines, look like Mexican churches. Not European Spanish churches. Old Filipino Spanish, was based on Mexican Spanish not European Spanish (Castilian). You'll find many words in Tagalog today, that are cognates of the Narhauntul tribe's dialect from Mexico. You can't find that in Castilian Spanish. Also, a lot of people from Luzon look Mexican. Not to say, a big significant but a lot of people have some noticeable phsyical similarities with Mexican people.
Also, Mexico and the Philippines were like "brothers" when it came to economic trade. Ever since the independance from Spain, Mexico and Philippines still continued to trade products like they were still Spanish territory.
Mexican contributions to Filipino culture include influences in cuisine (such as the use of tomatoes, chili peppers, and chocolate), language (Spanish loanwords), and religion (introduction of Catholicism). Additionally, Mexican traders introduced new goods and trading networks to the Philippines during the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade.
