WWII and Vietnam ran along parallel lines:

1. WWII was the first war in history in which each and every US infantryman was armed with a SEMI-AUTOMATIC rifle (the M1 Garand). Vietnam was the first war in history in which each and every US fighting man was armed with a FULLY AUTOMATIC rifle (the M16).

2. WWII introduced 3 dimensional warfare via airborne troops (paratroopers). Vietnam introduced airmobile troops (helicopters).

3. WWII was fought with propeller driven fighter planes, fighter bombers, and strategic bombers. Vietnam was fought with JET fighters, JET fighter bombers, and JET strategic bombers.

4. WWII utilized wooden Patrol Boats (PT Boats). Vietnam used aluminum Patrol Boats (Swift Boats).

Jets had passed thru the embryo and elementary stages via WWII and Korea respectively. By the 1950s US jets were high-tech, deadly, and dependable. By the time of their deployment to South Vietnam in 1960/61 (the F100 Super Sabre was the first and the F101 Voodoo was the second) US jets exceeded Mach I and were armed with latest air to air missiles. Although the Super Sabre, like the F8 Crusader, were gun fighters (the cannon was their primary weapon).

The only 1960s designed and built US jet was the A7 Corsair; used by the US Navy/Air Force in the Vietnam War.

Bottom line: The jets of the 1950s fought in the Vietnam War; just as the US Army tanks of the 1950s were deployed to South Vietnam. Although the M551 mostly aluminum constructed Sheridan tank was designed, built, and deployed to Vietnam in the 1960s.

Are there any differences between conventional weapons and non conventional weapons?

Conventional means accepted standards. Conventional weapons are normal weapons that most nations possess; warships, airplanes, artillery, tanks, Machineguns, etc. Un-Conventional Weapons are weapons that most nations do NOT possess. Nuclear Weapons would be un-conventional weapons. An un-heard of primitive weapon might be considered an un-conventional weapon. The term can also be applied to warfare itself: Un-Conventional Warfare might be guerrilla warfare; Conventional warfare would be traditional Armies fighting against another Army.
