Despite suffering several major defeats in 1863, the Confederacy still had the ability to resist the Union's attempt to force the South to surrender. The Battle of Chickamagua was a Union setback for example and the Union's naval blockade had not yet crippled the South into submission. Also the conquest of Mississippi had not produced the logistical advantages the North hoped for. Union advances in the West were hampered by the lack of waterways for logistical support. In the East, Virginia, for example, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, remained a roadblock for the North's ambitions against Richmond.
