Embalming, or was that the Egyptians? Please improve this answer. Okay,I'll try to improve the answer. Yes, embalming was the Egyptians, although the Romans knew of it because there was/is a story of an ancient Roman woman being embalmed and when discovered her body was lifelike.( Don't know if this is a hoax) At any rate, when someone died in ancient Rome, he was washed and dressed in his finest clothing. Then, he was laid out similar to our present day wakes. Depending upon his status, the wake would either be held in the person's house or if he were poor and belonged to a funeral society, he would be laid out in the society's room. He was then carried through the streets in a funeral procession and cremated and his ashes put either in the family tomb or in the funeral society's burial vault. These are the basics. A wealthy person would of course, have a more elaborate send off. His house was garlanded with green branches, his body was displayed in the atrium for friends to see one last time, the males of the family would not shave their beards for at least three days and depending upon the times, the men cut a chunk of the front of their hair. A wealthy person's funeral procession was also much more elaborate, with hired clowns wearing his ancestral masks, if he had any. There was usually a dinner of some type afterwards, both for the poor and the wealthy.

Additionally, Mayans practiced bloodletting rituals and human sacrifice, while Romans mainly offered sacrifices of animals and sometimes prisoners of war to their gods.
