He was largely responsible for the advent of the Hellenistic Period in which Greek art and culture dominated much of today's Middle East for around the next 300 years. In that period, preserving old works of Greek art and literature became a dominant factor: it is because of the Hellenistic period's efforts that we still know the works of famous Greek philosophers, mathematicians and sculptors.

Another aspect was that his conquests re-drew the map of the Middle East: after his death and with no successor to take over, his close associates and generals fough each other for over the next 25 years to carve out pieces of his empire for themselves. It led to newly-established kingdoms and dynasties, some long-lived like the Ptolemaic dynasty that would rule over Egypt for the next 300 years.
