The colonization of India by the UK in the late 1700's was basically an aggressive takeover of an underdeveloped nation. The UK benefited by having access to the vast Natural Resources of India. The UK also had a source for soldiers to recruit from during WW2. How India would have developed without British colonization is an unknown factor. Any advantages India obtained by being a captive nation of the British Empire are negated by the UK's forceful occupation.

Good answer however I'll add a few items and do some spelling corrections. The above answer hits upon some points that the British cannot be proud of. Rather then reword what was written. I'll edit the items outlined and put together a brief response.

The question was about Great Britain & India. So I'll comment that one huge advantage for the Brits was the "ownership" of an India that gave Britain access to wealth from its occupation.

Whatever economy or culture that might have been developed by India was negated by the Brits.

This occupation by Great Britain helped make it the most powerful empire until the 20th century came upon them.

As for "forcing " any other European nation to duplicate British policies in the Sub-Continent, I can't agree with. It seems to me that all the colonial powers were doing what they pleased with the nations they took over. This was irregardless of what the Brits did in India.

Yes there had to be conflict between the UK and other colonial powers as it was a "race" to see who could have the largest "empire"

To make this brief I'll say that the only "benefit " gained by India, was a stronger link to( after the Brits withdrew), a nation that could take from the British whatever was good for India's modernization. I think this question may land in the discussion area.
