Slavery ended throughout the United States. Amendments 13, 14, and 15 were added to the Constitution, banning slavery, ensuring full civil rights, etc. However, the racial and regional tension from the war remained. Lynchings and other abuses of freed slaves and their descendants became commonplace.

After the Civil War, much of the south lay in ruins. Roads, bridges, and railways were also destroyed.
