On the positive side, hydroelectric power has been generated. However, the negatives seem to have far outweighed the intended positive effects. These include the displacement of tens, even hundreds, of thousands of residents, flooded out by the rising lake on the upstream side of the dam. In addition, there has been an increase in disease and death in the area around the dam. It has been a highly controversial project, indeed. Overall, it has been a tragedy of epic human proportions.
