How did the underground railroad affect slavery?

An organized system to assist runaway slaves seems to have begun towards the end of the 18th century. In 1786 George Washington complained about how one of his runaway slaves was helped by a "society of Quakers, formed for such purposes." The system grew, and around 1831 it was dubbed "The Underground Railroad," after the then emerging steam railroads. The system even used terms used in railroading: the homes and businesses where fugitives would rest and eat were called "stations" and "depots" and were run by "stationmasters," those who contributed money or goods were "stockholders," and the "conductor" was responsible for moving fugitives from one station to the next.

Where the underground railroad traveled?

The Underground Railroad moved slaves from the southern United States towards freedom in a number of locations. There was not a specific road, or trail that defined the path to freedom, but a loose collection of locations, many of which were never formally identified or documented. Segments of these paths were managed by some abolitionists, but mostly by average citizens who very often kept their clandestine activities away from even their closest friends and family, allowing slaves to be ferried from one location to another in almost complete secrecy. The primary destination of the railroad was to the north, generally the Northeast due to the higher population density which afforded more cover. However, final destinations ranged anywhere from the northern US to Canada, Mexico, Florida (prior to US acquisition) and even to Europe.
