The outbreak of the French/Indian War in the 1750s was caused by the conflicting attempts of the French and the British to control the trade routes and trade sources of North America. Considerable wealth was at stake. The situation was complicated by the presence (and concerns) of Native Americans and independence-minded American colonists.

French fur trappers, including those in Canada, had regularly hunted in lands claimed by both the French and the English. Two expeditions were sent from Quebec, in 1747 and in 1752 to coerce the Indians to stop trading with the English. A third expedition in 1753 built forts in the Ohio Country (now Pennsylvania).

When militia under George Washington encountered the French, both sides prepared for hostilities. But it was not until May 28, 1754 that open war was provoked. A massacre by anti-French Indians led to a French assault on Washington's encampment at Fort Necessity (present-day Fayette County, Pennsylvania), forcing him to surrender and withdraw on July 3, 1754. With the sailing of French and British reinforcements, the war escalated, with rival Indian tribes on either side, and continued for another 9 years. The chief result was France's loss of Canada to British dominion.
