Opinions on the last major US Civil War battle vary, however, there is no doubt concerning the first major battle. The First Battle of Bull Run in July of 1861 was the real beginning of the war. Not only was it a major US Civil War battle, it was the largest battle ever fought in North America at that time. The Southern victory helped the Union to recognize the task that lay before them.In strict military history terms, the Union capture of Mobile, Alabama. Actually the battle is named the Battle of Fort Blakely. This fort guarded the City of Mobile and ran from April 2, to April 9, of 1865. As an aside, US Grant states in his memouirs that the battle was totally unnecessary as the South had already been defeated.

This leaves another battle to consider. This is termed the Third Battle of Petersburg on April 2, 1865. This is the final Lee versus Grant battle that paved the way for Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.

As a point of clarification, the bombardment and capture of Fort Sumter in April of 1861 was a battle that led to the US Civil War. This is supported by several important elements regarding that battle, which was a one -sided affair.

It was not until May 15, 1861 that the Confederate Congress recognized that it was in an armed conflict with the North. Secondly, it was until after Fort Sumter that US President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunters to serve three months to end the "rebellion". And, it was after that call for volunteers by Lincoln that the remaining four other US states, decided to join the Confederacy.

Also, the US Supreme Court held a hearing in 1862 to determine for legal reasons the exact beginning of the war.

They concluded that it was not until July of 1861, when Lincoln addressed the US Congress to ask for funds and longer term troops to end the rebellion that the war began.
