Tank, airplane, machine gun, poison gas, submarine were all new weapons in WW 1. At the end of that war, soldiers were asked to name what they thought was the most devastating weapon of that war, and they almost unanimously said: The machine gun.

During previous wars single shot rifles were used. But then after the Industrial Revolution new technologies came into existence. Rapid firing machine guns, tanks, planes, and gas all wreaked havoc on either side of the battles.

These were the tank, chemical weapons, and the Zeppelin. Machine guns and grenades had been in use for at least 12 years previously, machine guns being descended from the mid-19th Century Gatling Gun used in the American Civil War. Explosive shells were first invented in the early 19th Century in Napoleonic France, and the massively heavy artillery used in WW1 were the developmental culmination of heavy guns and howitzers that were developed throughout Victorian times.

Aircraft and armoured cars were first used in war by Italy during it's war against Turkish-occupied Libya in 1910, so can't be said never to have been used prior to WW1.
