The British Government were taxing the American Colonies ( later the original 13 States) for goods (food and items of basic needs of that time) without allowing the Colonies to have any vote, or input, into the discussions about the taxes. One of the primary goods was tea. This lead to a group of Boston colonist to dress as Native American Indians and board British merchant ships docked in Boston Harbor. The colonist threw tea into the water as am act if defiance in an action known as the Boston Tea Party.

There were many other acts that took place against the English which resulted in King George lll of England to send military troops to America (the colonies- primarily Boston at first) to take control of the defiant acts against England. The British troops landed near Boston and were very surprised to meet the rogue Army that colonist had put together. Much to the surprise of England, the American Army defeated them with some major help of Native Indians and France.

After fighting became more intense, a group of brave American colonist met in Philadelphia and wrote the Declaration of Independence, that declared the American Colonies to be free of control of King George and England. The British then sent more and more troops by ships to America to defeat the Colonies. The Americans formed a formal, but poorly furnished, Army to fight England. George Washington of Virginia was chosen to become the General who commanded the army of the American Colonist who changed the colonies the individual States that formed their own local governments.

Representative's of each States met at two Constitutional Conventions in Philadelphia where a group of leading colonist, like Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson wrote the Constitution of the United States of America. This famous group with others, wrote and signed the document that stated how the new Government of the United States would function. Each of the new States voted to ratify the Constitution. With a few changes, this Constitution still is the document that the Government of the United States is organized and functions onders today.
