The main issue in 1968 was the failure of the President Lyndon Baines Johnson (Democratic) administration to deal with the War in Vietnam. In the Spring of 1968, LBJ said he would not run again, because most American hated his Vietnam War policies and would not reelect him if he was the only person running for office.

In April 1968, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered by James Earl Ray, acting along, which made many people angry.

In June 1968, Senator Robert Kennedy (D) was murdered by Sirhan Bishop Sirhan, acting alone, which made even more people angry.

In the summer of 1968, there were massive riots in Chicago, Illinois where Vice President Hubert Humphrey, (D), was nominated.

In November 1968, in a very close election, Richard Nixon, (Republican), won election, after promising to end the war in Vietnam. Which he did in January 1973. after he won reelection in a landslide in 1972.

In 1974, President Nixon was forced to resign after the Watergate scandal.

In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford (R) gave up on South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, and the war really came to an end as far the USA was concerned.
