All ports were "legal" immigration ports as long as the process of immigration inspection was perfored when required. Major immigration ports included: * Seattle, WA * San Francisco, CA * Galveston, TX * Miami, FL * Baltimore, MD * Philadelphia, PA * Port of New York * Boston, MA In addition, immigrants could land in Canada at Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax, or Montreal and enter the US through Great Lakes Ports such as Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, and others, or by any number of land crossings along the US-Canadian border. The port of entry for immigrants landing at Montreal and taking the train to New York City was Rousse's Point, NY, on Lake Champlaign. There were many other crossing points for immigrants going to other destinations in the US or from other ports in Canada. Land crossings from Mexico at El Paso, TX, and other border towns were also used.

Proof of properly taxed legal transactions, such as land purchases, in the late 1800s and early 1900s was usually provided by the affixation of revenue stamps on the relevant documents. These stamps indicated that the required taxes had been paid and were attached to the deed or contract as evidence of compliance with tax laws.
