In the US, there are three branches of government, each with its own important functions. The legislative branch, better known as congress, is the only branch that can make new laws, or change existing laws. Congress also has the power to levy taxes, and it can also pass spending bills to keep the government operating. Congress can over-ride a presidential veto. And congress has the power to declare war. I enclose a link about the many different powers the legislative branch has.

Congress, which is then divided into the House of Representatives and the Senate, is the major body in the legislative branch.
The Legislative Branch is created via article I of the constitution. However, the legislative branch also plays a major role in article V, which concerns amending the constitution.
Congress and the House of Representatives
The major role of the legislative branch is to make laws that are passed as bills. They also have the function of setting a budget for the state.
Create the laws that the govenor soon looks at.
The legislative branch makes the laws and sends it to the president for signature. The executive branch runs the military and signs or vetoes bills made by the legislative branch. The judicial branch review high court cases, puts a limit on what the president can do, and make sure that all laws passed by congress are constitutional.
The expressed powers of the President of the United States (Chief Executive) are set down in Article II of the Constitution. The major function of the executive branch is to enforce the laws. The powers are of two sorts: those exercised alone without legislative approval and those that require consent of the Senate or House.
The important powers of the Legislative Branch are that the Congress can appropriate funds, impeach the president, can override veto, can impeach judges, can reject appointment of judges, and they can reject presidential appointments and refuse to approve treaties. They definitely have a lot of power! The Congress consists of two houses; the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives has 425 voting members, and the Senate consists of 100 senators, two from each state. So, overall, Congress's two primary functions are to make the nation's laws and to control government spending. They sure do obtain a lot of power! I hope that answers that question...I'm learning about this in school right now! KE, 13 years old.
