Lincoln was all about comprimise, being a nice person, and he held the civil war well.

The major reasons of Lincoln election can be found out of:

1 - the third paragraph of the Republican Party's program, that stated loud and clear that the Union was inviolable, that any secessionist proposal should be considered a project of treason to reject and silence forever.

2 - the economic principles of the program which peremptorily asked the legislative passage of the "Homestead Act", pointing out that the needy frontiersmen, who had already taken possession of Federal owned land, had done that rightly. The claim of land for the Have-nots found here full recognition and the frontiersmen saw their position justified and endorsed, thus encouraging them to join the Republican party.

3 - The program related to the free homesteads, was also addressed to the mass of poor of the East and immigrants in favor of which was clearly stated that they would be protected in every way.

These points of the program caused the displacement of a large mass of Democratic Party's voters in favor of the Republicans, making Lincoln the winner of the election.
