Apollo 11 was crewed by Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene 'Buzz' Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited in the Command Module.
Several US astronauts died in various ways before actually having flown in space (C. C. Williams, Ted Freeman, Ed Givens, Elliott See, and Charlie Bassett) but the first to die while actually participating in a space-related activity were the crew of Apollo 1-- Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, Edward H. White II, and Roger B. Chaffee. They were killed by a fire in their spacecraft while conducting a 'plugs out' test at Cape Kennedy on January 27th, 1967.

A pioneer is someone who is first to do something, particularly things like going to new places. The first astronauts are pioneers as they were the first people to go into space. Since then there have been many firsts for many astronauts, like first space walks, first orbit to the moon, first visit to the moon and so on. Astronauts continue to do new things and become the first people to do them. As long as space exploration continues to develop, there will always be pioneers amongst the astronauts.
