Representatives to the general assembly were called contingents. This was in the very first general assembly which was held in Virginia colony.
In 1619, the people of various districts sent delegates,called burgesses. This assembly advised the governor of the colony and assisted him in making laws. Virginia became a royal colony.
There is a colony called, The colony of Virginia. It is right where the state of Virginia now sits.
There was no Governor of Virginia in 1610 because the only thing there was Jamestown. They had just gone through one of the worse winters that was so bad it was called the "starving time." John Rolf shows up with tobacco and saves the colony.

Virginia became known as the largest English colony because it was the first successful settlement. It was because of their governor (I think that's what he was) made sure nobody slacked off. This settlement was named after the king, it was called Jamestown.
The colony of Virginia was named after England's Queen Elizabeth I, she was called "The Virgin Queen".
When representatives are chosen throughout the US this is called elections. Just like you elect the president or the governor.
