The roads were like mud in the Winter and Hard Rock in the summer. The Winters cold made the dirt track sloppy and like mud. However, in the summer, the heat basically boiled the dirt and left it like rock
In 1750 a group of people who were concerned about the improvment of the roads of their country formed a group called the "Turnpike Trust". This group of people took permission from the Parliament to build toll gates on stretches of road. The road users had to pay a certain amount of money called toll to pass through the gate. This money was then spent on maintaining and improving the road. By 1770 turnpike roads covered 15,000 miles of England and Wales and, by 1821, the new roads considerably shortened journey times for stagecoaches from London.
Roads in 1750 were very dangerous and sometimes impossible to travel on. In summer the roads became rock hard, on the other hand in winter roads turned into roads of mud. This could sometimes lead to dangerous driving and therefore harder to repair. men had the duty of 6 times a week checking the roads and starting work on cleaning them making sure it was safe!
