When Edward Eyre first attempted to cross the continent, he took a large, well-equipped party with two drays loaded with supplies such as flour, salt, sugar, tea and potatoes. He also took 13 horses and 40 sheep. When it became apparent that he could not find a break through the saltpans to the north, he decided to take a much smaller party with fewer supplies, hoping to move faster in his efforts to cross to the west. The party included 11 horses and six sheep. As supplies dwindled, the men were reduced to eating boiled horsemeat, eagle stew and rotten stingray. When they reached the edge of the Nullarbor and the end of the huge cliffs of the Great Australian Bight, they were able to catch and eat fresh fish, kangaroos and possums. At one stage, Wylie the Aborigine gorged himself on an entire kangaroo and a dead penguin they found on the beach.
