The Roman Empire was made up of the consuls, assembly and senate. The senate is like our legislative, consuls are like executive made up of powerful military generals and the assembly is like judicial. The assembly elected the consuls but the consuls almost always listened to the senate.
In ancient Rome, the government was split into three branches, known as the Magistrates, the Senate, and the Assemblies.
Magistrates: This branch of government included various elected officials who held executive power, including Consuls, Praetors, Censors, and Aediles. The Consuls, who were the highest ranking magistrates, were responsible for commanding the army, enforcing laws, and performing various judicial and financial duties.
Senate: The Senate consisted of around 300 members who were appointed for life by the magistrates. The Senate was responsible for advising the magistrates on matters of state, and its members served as the final authority on many important decisions, such as declaring war or appointing public officials.
Assemblies: The Assemblies were composed of citizens who gathered together to vote on various issues, such as electing magistrates, passing laws, and amending the constitution. There were several different assemblies in ancient Rome, including the Comitia Centuriata, which was the largest and most influential, and the Concilium Plebis, which was made up of common people and focused on issues related to the rights of the plebeians.
Together, these three branches of government in ancient Rome created a system of checks and balances that helped to distribute power and prevent any one person or group from gaining too much control.

This three-branched republic was outlined by the Roman Senator Cicero at the end of the Roman Republic. Too bad that our own Republic appears to be dying.
