The colonies were founded to search for gold and other riches, and expansion of power.
They wanted to find wealth and in order to do that they had to look overseas for it and into other countries and even continents
One of the widely accepted reasons is that Europeans were attempting to find a route to China and India. However, while true, this statement lacks truth. Many Europeans were seeking freedom from religious persecution. Ever hear of the Pilgrims? That's what they were all about. Other reasons to come to North America would be cheap land, a chance for adventure, and easy money.
Because these represented unknown, undeveloped lands that had no large populations or industry. The Americas had great potential for agriculture, mining, and other types of commercial developments. The Native Americans, isolated from the more developed areas of Europe and Asia, did not have the same level of technology, and did not own and use the land in the same way as Europeans did.

One of the main reasons Europeans wanted to explore the unknown was the desire for wealth and resources. They were in search of new trade routes to Asia and the valuable goods that could be obtained there. Additionally, there was a strong motivation to spread Christianity and convert indigenous populations to the faith. Scientific curiosity and a thirst for knowledge also played a role in driving European exploration.
An example of exploration to the east would be the Crusades. The Crusades happened for multiple reasons one was to flush out heretics and Muslims and the other was to get the riches that the East held in store.
