Sadly to say, very little is known of George Washington's childhood. What we do know is mere legend and folklore ment by early Americal historians to fill in the gaps of our Founding Father. Early American historians, who knew little of Wasington's obscure upbringing, filled the first U.S. history books with innacurate stories and fabled facts they simply made up or did not know. Unfortunatly, these legends and mere lies still exisits as facts in schools today. For instance, the legendary cherry tree incident and a young Washington's inability to tell lies, of course, sprang from the tales of Parson Weems. But what we do know for fact is that George Washington's father died when he was 11 years old and was raised by his older brother Lawerence in whom Washington most certainly sought to emulate and treated as his father.(S.Menzel)
Washington was the second son of a fairly well off farmer. At 14 years old he tried to sign on to a British war ship to be a powder monkey, but his mother took him off the ship. In 1747 he went to Mt. Vernon to live with his older brother. Here he had access to books, hunting, use of arms, and studied the art of war. As a young man he worked as a surveyor and in 1754 was sent with a military expedition to maintain VA claim to Ohio lands against the French. He became a officer on the personal staff of Braddock and then became the head of the VA forces in 1756. In 1759 he married Martha Custis. The story about his chopping down a cherry tree and throwing a coin across the Potomac came from a book written by biographer Mason Weems a 100 years after Washington died.

Many people say it was his music but as a child prodigy music was never really that difficult for him and even if it was he would enjoy it. Probably his greatest achievement was to 'grow up'. After his less than normal childhood it was natural for him to believe that life would always be that way, but it wasn't. It seems right that the greatest accomplishment of a person like him was for nobody but himself.
There are many ways to celebrate the accomplishment of a child. One would be to throw a party for them and their friends, or alternatively buy them a meaningful gift or take them out on a trip. Ask the child what they would like to do.
