The death toll of both sides in the US Civil War was high due to these reasons:1. Disease caused the majority of soldier losses on both sides of the war;

2. New weaponry such as rifled guns and huge cannons, literally wiped out frontal assaults on enemy entrenchments; and

3. The concept of "total war" enacted by the North devastated Southern armies and populations. The concept of unconditional surrender added to conflicts the idea of continued fighting by the South, rather then accepting surrender with unfavorable terms.

Soldiers were of course the primary victims of death during the US Civil War. Three ways the soldiers on both sides of the war died were from mortal wounds caused by gunfire and artillery fire. Another major cause was from disease. The third major ways soldiers died was from infections due to battle wounds or infections as the result of surgery to sever limbs and other operations surgeons attempted on wounded troops.
