We will have to move onto more sensible energy resources, like we should have done years ago when hydrogen became an obvious choice that was kept rather quiet.

Our best option will be nuclear fusion. We are going to run out of oil globally eventually.

Nuclear fusion has so many benefits that it is ridiculous we are not making more of an effort to get it working. Our cars etc will become obsolete unless they are converted to operate by oxidizing (burning) hydrogen, which will be readily available by the companies making deuterium for the fusion reactors.

Yes, oil is a finite resource. When is the real question and it is going to be a very long time.

The issue is that it may not be regarded as 'running out', as we may have found a much better way of producing energy such that oil is obsolete, before we run out of it. However, we will, more than likely, run out because we will always need to run cars, and there aren't many alternatives.

When the world will run out of it is another question. We might speculate that the Antarctic covers the world's largest supply of oil ever. We just need to extract it. This may take us a few decades. We just don't know. That depends on whether the demand for fuel is greater than the demand for the peaceful environment of the penguins in the future.

The future is unpredictable, so the best option is to wait and see, I'm afraid.

then we will have to convert to a natral resorce such as horses or find a gas that will work and can make alot of.

There's another point usually over-looked in this: crude oil is the source of a huge range of chemicals, not just fuels, used in plastics, paints, pharmaceuticals etc. etc.

  • We will have to use renewable energy like solar, wind, hydro, wave, tidal, geothermal and others.
  • We will have to use electric vehicles.
  • We will have to make plastic from vegetable oil.

If oil and gas run out before we have converted to other every sources it will be too late to do anything about it. Civilization will basically collapse with a long slow recover period stretching into a bleak future. No trains, planes or trucks. No gas or oil heating - therefor no food imports, no medical drugs, no plastics.

What would happen if oil runs out?

Nothing. There is plenty of other energy resources. There is so much worry about what will happen when all oil reserves are depleted. By that time we will have advanced technology for electric cars that could travel the circumference of the world. A nuclear explosion releases a huge amount of energy. Imagine if that energy can be safely channeled to homes, factories, and transportation. Nuclear reactors are enough to power the world after there is no oil. There is wind power and solar power and many other undiscovered energy sources. When oil runs out there will be a lot of change, but it will work.
