Changing a starter in a 1985 Pontiac Sunbird is not very difficult. The car will first need to be jacked up. After the car is jacked up, locate the starter. The wires will need to be taken off the starter and labeled so they can be reattached to the new starter. The starter is then taken down by using a ratchet to take of the bolts. After the starter is taken off, the new one can be put on.
Remove the wires from the starter. Remove the retaining bolts. The starter will easily come out. Reverse the process to install the new starter.

Jack up front end so wheels are almost off ground, disconnect battery positive, then disconnect wires from starter, directly in front of engine to driver side of oil filter. Starter is held to trans shell with 2 bolts, I seem to remember they were 15 mm, but not certain. Clean off mounting area and refit wires to new starter first then bolt it in place.
