Is your passenger floorboard wet? Same sort of thing happend in my stanza and it was the heater core. I just bypassed it, but if you do that you will still be stuck without heat.

My sister's car had the same symptoms and it turned out that her water pump was bad. Without circulating the water/coolant, there was no way to get water flowing though the engine to cool it down, and no water going through the heater core to warm the interior.
-Also, the thermostat can cause this, especially if your coolant is old and dirty.
The overheat of the engine. You could find some information on Wikipedia.
The fuel mixtue has gone lean.
Low coolant, stuck thermostat, blown headgasket (from overheating BEFORE) or a damaged (rusted) water pump.
Too high a temperature
it is possible for heat from combustion to cause an engine to overheat quickly depending on where the gasket is blown, but i would look for a lack of coolant circulation first. if your coolant is not getting out of the motor and into the radiator it will overheat very quickly.
