What you're smelling is probably Anti-Freeze. It sounds like your heater core may be going out or is out. It will have to be changed, but it's not a job for the weak of heart.
If the heater core is leaking you will have a sweet smell in the cab and the dash will feel tacky. Might just need to change the cab air filter.
