∙ 2011-09-13 17:53:36sounds like water pump going out, look around for coolant leaking, from passg side of motor, near timing belt cover, if so will need t/b replaced w/water pump.
I my 98 zx2 has a loud squeeling (havn't noticed the smell, but I'll check). took it to the dealership for service. they said it was a loose drive shaft and that I shouldn't worry about replacing it and would probably only get 60K more miles out of the car. let me know what else you find.

∙ 2011-09-13 17:53:36Yes.Equally likely is if the belt is much more than 3-4 years, the material is glazing over or hardening, which is another common cause of squealing.
might be your power steering or something in that nature
A worn belt will cause a squealing noise. The squealing noise is caused when the belt slips. Tightening the belt will temporarily fix the problem.
Check the belts. The most common cause of squealing is a worn or loose belt on the front of the engine.
lack of oil
When refilling the oil some may have dripped onto the belt which would cause it to start slipping badly and squealing loudly.
A loose or glazed "fan belt" is a very common cause of squealing. A quieter squeal is produced by brake linings that are almost worn through.
Turning the steering wheel farthest left or right for a few seconds will cause a loud squealing.
AC Compressor
Mixing the new red antifreeze with the green can cause it to look rusty and will form a sludge. If someone is topping off your antifreeze recovery tank during oil changes with the wrong product could be one cause.
